For the demolition of the former cement plant in Pescara, Italy, SDI Gruppo Testani is relying on two specialized demolition machines from SENNEBOGEN. While the SENNEBOGEN 870 E Demolition, with a boom height of 36 meters, enables the demolition of tall industrial buildings, the SENNEBOGEN 825 E Demolition complements it for other demolition work. The machines are supporting the controlled demolition of concrete and steel structures on the approximately 11-hectare industrial site. They were supplied by the Italian sales and service partner Cesaro Mac Import.
Industrial buildings up to 57 meters high, massive concrete and steel structures, and the site’s proximity to a highway interchange pose significant challenges for the demolition of the former cement plant in Pescara. The approximately 11-hectare site has been characterized for decades by its striking, red-striped silos, which help define the cityscape at the entrance to Pescara.
For the demolition contractor in charge, SDI Gruppo Testani, the focus is not only on controlled demolition but also on the future use of the industrial site. The goal is to reclaim land, recycle as many materials as possible, and reduce the environmental impact of the existing site. The height of the building structures, in particular, requires powerful demolition machines with a long reach, high stability, and a clear view of the work area.
“The demolition of the cement plant in Pescara is a challenging project that requires specialized equipment capable of working safely at great heights,” explain Mariagrazia and Giovanni Testani. “For this reason, we opted for machines with a long reach that can operate where other solutions reach their operational limits.”
The SENNEBOGEN 870 E Demolition significantly expands the range of applications on the job site. While the machines previously used reached a practical working height of around 25 meters, the 870 E, with its three-section demolition boom, achieves a bolt height of 36 meters and a reach of up to 20 meters. Depending on the operating configuration, the lifting capacity is up to four metric tons.
This enables SDI Gruppo Testani to specifically target higher areas of buildings that were previously inaccessible with the old machinery. The combination of high working height, reach, and a sturdy machine design creates the conditions for controlled and continuous demolition. “Today, with the 870 E, we have an extremely robust and efficient machine that enables us to work more effectively and continuously,” the company explains.
Feature | Technical Specifications |
| Boom | Three-section demolition boom |
| Boom height | 36 m |
| Reach | Up to 20 m |
| Lifting capacity | Up to 4 t |
| Cab lift | Up to 2.70 m |
| Cab tilt | 30° |
| Applications | Industrial demolition at great heights |
When demolishing tall structures, a clear view of the work area and a stable machine position are particularly important. The SENNEBOGEN 870 E Demolition is therefore equipped with a hydraulically liftable and tiltable operator’s cab that can be raised up to 2.70 meters and tilted by 30 degrees.
This gives the operator a better view of the attachment, the demolition edge, and the flow of material. This facilitates precise control of demolition operations, especially in areas of the building that are difficult to see.
An integrated camera system further aids in monitoring the machine’s surroundings. Laminated safety glass, protective features on the front and top of the cab, and modern monitoring systems all contribute to the operator’s safety.
This safety concept is complemented by the machine’s robust construction. It provides a crucial foundation for controlled movements of the demolition boom and reliable performance during demanding demolition work.
Both the SENNEBOGEN 870 E Demolition and the SENNEBOGEN 825 E Demolition are being used in the demolition of the cement plant in Pescara. While the 870 E is used primarily for the tall building structures, the 825 E complements the work on the sprawling industrial site.
The use of both machines stemmed from a long-standing partnership with Cesaro Mac Import. Originally, SDI Gruppo Testani was looking for a 40-ton-class demolition machine. The Italian sales and service partner initially recommended the SENNEBOGEN 825 E Demolition, which proved its worth on the project and continues to operate on the construction site.
The SENNEBOGEN 870 E Demolition was later added for the particularly tall building structures. With its greater working height, it expands the demolition company’s technical capabilities.
“Our relationship with Cesaro developed positively from the very beginning. We were originally looking for a 40-ton demolition machine and were offered an initial model with which we achieved excellent results: the SENNEBOGEN 825 E Demolition, which is still in use on this project today. Later, we switched to the 870 E, which has become an important part of the construction site.”
As SENNEBOGEN’s Italian sales and service partner, Cesaro Mac Import supports the demolition company SDI Gruppo Testani in selecting and providing suitable machinery.
The collaboration began with the search for a high-performance demolition machine and evolved with the deployment of the SENNEBOGEN 825 E and, later, the 870 E.
Especially in complex industrial demolition projects, the availability of suitable machines is just as crucial as technical performance. An experienced sales and service partner helps tailor the machinery to the specific requirements of each job.
For SDI Gruppo Testani, the most important advantage of the SENNEBOGEN 870 E Demolition is the significantly greater working height it can reach. With a bolt height of 36 meters, the company can work on areas of buildings that were previously beyond the practical capabilities of its existing machines.
Combined with the improved visibility from the liftable and tiltable cab, the safety systems, and the sturdy machine design, the 870 E supports a controlled and continuous workflow.
“Our most important requirement related to the height of the structures, which reach up to 57 meters,” explain representatives from SDI Gruppo Testani. “We opted for a 36-meter boom configuration. Without this machine, we would not have been able to carry out the demolition work. It is the machine that will accompany us from the beginning to the end of the project.”
The demolition of the former cement plant in Pescara is not only a technical demolition project but also a step toward the site’s future development. By reclaiming land and planning to recycle demolition materials, the project paves the way for new uses of the site.
“Today, companies must look to the future and keep pace with the changing demands placed on their sites,” summarize Mariagrazia and Giovanni Testani.
The project demonstrates how specialized demolition machines and collaboration between the machine manufacturer, sales and service partners, and demolition contractors support the demolition of complex industrial facilities. The SENNEBOGEN 870 E Demolition handles work at great heights in particular, while the SENNEBOGEN 825 E Demolition complements the machine setup on the construction site.
