Where a prefabricated block of flats once towered into the sky, space is now being created for something new. Precise and safe demolition work plays a crucial role, particularly in inner-city locations where building land is scarce. For the demolition of an 11-storey high-rise, the contractor Metzner GmbH therefore relied on high-performance technology: the 117-ton SENNEBOGEN 870E Demolition long-front demolition excavator.
As part of the demolition project, an 11-storey high-rise building over 33 metres tall was demolished. The building consisted mainly of reinforced concrete. The task involved the controlled demolition of the self-supporting slab and wall structure. In addition, the steel reinforcement contained within the structural elements was separated to enable subsequent sorting and recycling of the materials.
The site is located in an inner-city area with limited space. Consequently, the requirements regarding safety, reach and precision were particularly high. At the same time, there was a requirement to keep dust generation during demolition to a minimum.
The SENNEBOGEN 870 E Demolition, equipped with a long-reach boom offering a reach of up to 36 metres, was deployed. This made it possible to safely reach the upper floors and work beyond the edge of the demolition site.
Demolition shears weighing 3.1 tonnes and fitted with a quick-coupling system were used as attachments. The quick-coupler system enabled rapid tool changes and ensured flexibility in the workflow. To minimise dust generation, the machine is equipped with an integrated spray system fitted directly to the demolition tool. In addition, cameras and good lighting of the work area assist the machine operator in working safely and precisely.
The 870E long-reach excavator proved particularly well-suited to this job. The machine combines a long reach with high lifting capacity and excellent stability – key requirements for demolition work at great heights. Even with the boom fully extended and heavy attachments fitted, the machine remains stable, enabling controlled work on the structure. The responsive hydraulics facilitate the precise removal of individual components.
Key factors in the decision to hire this SENNEBOGEN demolition excavator included its high operational reliability, robust construction, good service and spare parts supply, and cost-effectiveness over its entire lifecycle.
The project was carried out by Metzner GmbH, a medium-sized civil engineering, earthworks and demolition company based in Ossling, Saxony, which specialises in challenging projects in the fields of demolition, civil engineering and recycling in Saxony and Brandenburg.
"Excellent lifting capacity even at full reach, combined with precise handling – this makes controlled demolition work significantly easier"
As we all know, time is a key cost factor, which makes it even more important to always keep cost-effectiveness in mind during demolition projects. Here too, the SENNEBOGEN 870 E Longfront demolition machine offers clear advantages: efficient transport logistics significantly reduce the number of required machine transports and the need for additional staff, as only the three machine components – the base machine, demolition equipment and counterweight – need to be moved. The total weight can be significantly reduced by 26 tonnes with the removable rear ballast and by 28 tonnes with the three-section boom. Equally advantageous is the ability to transport the base machine body optimally on a low bed trailer due to the compact, telescopic undercarriage.
