Telescopic crane and material handler place sheet pile walls in hydraulic engineering for DOMARIN

The Wöhrder See lake in Nuremberg, Germany has been undergoing extensive restoration since 2012. By mid 2016, the Norikus bay there will be redeveloped with a longitudinal dike. The hydraulic engineering company DOMARIN is currently installing the necessary sheet pile walls for the 400 m long dike.

Wöhrder See extends over a length of around 1400 meters in the eastern part of Nuremberg and is crossed by the Pegnitz River. In the past decades, heavy deposits have silted up the man-made lake created in 1981, which is why restoration and redevelopment have been underway since 2012. The hydraulic engineering company DOMARIN is currently charged with building a longitudinal dike over 400 m along the Norikus bay, in one of the last construction phases. This separates a section of the water surface to improve the flow conditions and thus the water quality further.

Telescopic crane rams pile sheet walls for dike construction

For the required pile driving with pile sheet walls of up to 12 m in length, DOMARIN relies on a duo consisting of a SENNEBOGEN 835 material handler and a 40 t SENNEBOGEN 643 telescopic crane. The telescopic crane with a 30 m long boom takes care of the long piles, while the 835 drives the 7 m pile sheet walls into the lake bottom with an ABI vibrator from a pontoon. This creates a firm dike construction that will be elevated with a total of 18,000 t of stone material from the Frankenjura region of Germany in the next step. The material handler with its 17 m equipment and attached shovel is used here as well. In the future, a 2.5 m wide footpath will run along the newly created dike that separates the bay from the rest of the lake as a regeneration zone.
Especially the 40 t telescopic crawler crane proves its worth in this application, as Managing Director Johann Brunner confirms at the winter on-site visit. "We have placed our trust in the reliable SENNEBOGEN machines in our fleet for decades. The easy transport of the machines and the good service from the sales partner IBS Industrie- und Baumaschinenservice have proven themselves in daily use."

The flexibly usable 40 telescopic crane in particular shows its strength in special underground engineering. Thanks to the sturdy telescopic boom of the SENNEBOGEN 643, DOMARIN can not only use the crane for the necessary lifting and loading activities but can also perfectly place pile sheet walls where reach and load capacity are required, even with a pile driver ram vibrator attached, Brunner continues.
Parallel to the 40 t telescopic crane that is used in Nuremberg, two SENNEBOGEN 835 material handlers work with a crawler chassis on a pontoon and with mobile tires from the shore. Depending on the work step, the machines are used to elevate and form the shore. The channel dredging and preparation of the shore for future recreational use is also done with the green material handlers, which are optimally suited for this with their long reach and convenient safe working loads.

In addition to the above-mentioned machines, DOMARIN also has four other SENNEBOGEN material handlers in their machine park that are used in hydraulic engineering throughout Germany.

"SENNEBOGEN quality has simply convinced us – we want to continue and expand the good cooperation that has operated successfully through IBS for 14 years now in the future as well," IBS Managing Director Walter Fischer and DOMARIN Managing Director Johann Brunner agree.
