Intelligent crane use: crawler cranes assemble prefabricated parts at Daimler

The Glass Construction Group in Mindelheim specializes in civil engineering projects using precast concrete works and recently constructed a new engine plant for Daimler. Two crawler cranes were used in tight quarters to lift parts weighing up to 50 t.

In the Swabian town of Untertürkheim, Daimler AG produces engines, axles, transmissions and other components for its Mercedes-Benz Cars division. A new production hall made of precast concrete is being constructed on about 4,500 m² and is scheduled to be finished by April 2015. The Glass Construction Group rented two flexible SENNEBOGEN crawler cranes, one with 300 t and the other with 180 t maximum load capacity, from Wiesbauer GmbH, Bietigheim-Bissingen to securely position the members, which weigh up to 50 t.

The challenge of the construction project was the tight fit of the 10 m deep excavation pit. For optimal logistics, the 300 t crane was positioned in the middle of the construction site. With a pit measuring just 60 m x 75 m, the compact size and simple assembly system of the 7700 crawler crane were pivotal. Together with Wiesbauer GmbH, Glass had already worked out a detailed assembly concept before building began in order to assemble the precast members efficiently and quickly. Preparation that paid off. With the help of the two SENNEBOGEN crawler cranes, the structural work was handed over to Daimler two whole months early.

"The two SENNEBOGEN crawler cranes played an important role," said Michael Stehr, Site Manager at Glass. The simple and space-saving assembly, as well as the ability to travel with load, ultimately tipped the scales in favor of choosing the SENNEBOGEN cranes. While the 7700 worked in the pit, its "little brother" helped from outside, as well as with assembling and disassembling the crane in the small pit.
